You want to use your product, but the screen remains black or no lights come on. That’s really frustrating!
Before you assume the device is permanently broken and send it back: just wait a moment. In practice, it often turns out that a product is not faulty, but that there’s an issue somewhere in the power supply.
Go through this checklist, there’s a good chance you’ll get it working again.
Check the power source
Start with the basics. Does the device run on a rechargeable battery or regular batteries?
- Batteries: Are they full and inserted the right way round (+ and -)? If it’s a new product, have you removed the plastic protective tab from between the batteries?
- Rechargeable battery: First, try fully charging the device. Sometimes a battery is so empty after a long time in the box that it needs to ‘wake up’ on the charger.
Check the cables
Does it run on mains power?
- Push the plug firmly into both the device and the socket.
- Just to be sure, also try a different socket to rule out any issues there.
The On/Off button (sometimes hard to find)
It might sound obvious, but sometimes the power button works differently than you expect.
- Do you perhaps need to hold the button down for a few seconds instead of just pressing it briefly?
- Is there a main switch somewhere (for example, on the back or underside) that first needs to be set to ‘I’ (on)?
The miracle cure: Resetting
Electronics can sometimes simply ‘freeze’. A hard reset often works wonders.
- If possible, disconnect the device completely from the power or remove the batteries.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect everything and try again. Often, that brings things back to life!
Still no sign of life?
Have you gone through all the steps above and still nothing happens? Then it’s probably a genuine defect.
